Turkey Meatloaf Training Treats

When you're working on training with your dog, you need a treat that is healthy, easily broken into small pieces, and something high value that your pup will work hard for! These 4 ingredient turkey meatballs are perfect! Make a big batch, freeze and then thaw when needed.

Important! This is not a substitute for a nutritionally complete meal. This is a treat recipe and may be fed as a fresh food treat in place of processed treats.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of lean ground turkey

  • 1/2 cup of whole grain oats

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tbsp plain tomato paste

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Place oats in food processor and whizz until finely ground. This step ensures that the meatballs will have a smooth texture. The oats are needed to bind all the ingredients.

  3. Combine meat, egg, tomato paste and oats in a large bowl and mix well.

  4. Form into balls about 2 inches in diameter.

  5. Arrange on a non-stick tray and bake for about 12 - 15 minutes.

  6. Remove from oven and let meatballs cool completely. Store in the fridge for use within 3 days, or freeze for later.

  7. Feed small bits of the meatball during training sessions. One meatball should last fairly long.

Nutrition Tips:

  • Oats are gluten free, low on the gylcemic index, and a good source of soluble fiber. I use Canadian grown NON GMO oats.

  • Tomato paste is packed with lycopene which supports eye health and may protect against cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.

  • If you have a smaller dog and need smaller sized meatballs, decrease the size and cooking time.
